Well, it's almost here!! As I posted in the 'new cd coming soon' topic, there are already two tracks on the internet to listen to. To be honest, the first 30 seconds of my first listening, I didn't like. :o( But I've listened a few more times since then.
I have to walk past a CD store every day, and I haven't seen any advertisements for her new CD. However, the Jay CHou posters went up a few days before release, FIR was well in advance, Fish Leong went up the day the CD arrived in the store... Hopefully they'll have a huge poster of Karen when the CD arrives :o) :o)

Does anyone know of any new singers, who sing in Mandarin, that I might like. I prefer female voices. I want to hear a few new voices but can't afford to buy every CD I see in a store on the off-chance it might be good! haha
I heard a song at the beginning of a TV show called Tokyo Juliet. I really like that, I can only find 2 songs by the band listed on the internet though. Here's a link to the song. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rsXvdVdqI30
This will give you more of an idea about what I like.
I've picked up about 6 ot 7 cds this week by different singers but haven't fallen in love with any of them-not even fallen in 'like' with them haha
So-you guys, do you listen to other music in Mandarin? Do you listen to any new artists? If so, can you tell me who I should be looking for to buy? I'm looking more for newer artists rather than established singers like Faye Wang. Also, if you can siggest anybody do you have their Chinese (Mandarin) name as well because I will only be able to ask if I know their Chinese name. Thanks in advance to anyone who might read this and might have an idea or two. :o)

I had the tv on this morning but wasn't really watching it. I heard Karen talking so of course started to pay attention. :o) My Chinese isn't good, so I have to listen to things a couple of times before I understand. Even though I wasn't taping the show, I wasn't bothered because it was a repeat from last night and I record the show every evening. However, when I checked the recording from last night, there wasn't enough room on the disc and it cut off before Karen came on. :o( So, I don't know what was going on. :o( Karen was dressed all in silver, at a party. The camera was focused on her, so I don't think it was a film. I couldn't hear any music playing, so I don't think it was for a new song but I could be wrong. There wasn't any product placement so it didn't look like a commercial either! Does anybody know what she's doing at the moment? What was it? I can't remember anything she said, other than I kept getting distracted because she kept saying 'party' in English.

Is there any more news of a new cd?

A Sonnet 　　　　　　　　　 Karen Mok

Like a ball of fire, the sun erupted

From the volcano. A blazing bright red,

Like a drop of impish blood, reflected

In my eyes. Beads of sweat on my forehead

Glistened in this strong light as they trickled

Down my face like a stream of silvery tears.

The grasses rubbing in the wind, cackled

And destroyed the calmness that filled my ears.

The orange sphere that dominated the sky

Gradually lost its vigour and might;

For small twinkling stars eclipsed the shy

Setting sun that slowly sank out of sight.

Not a sound intruded the sleeping world

As the mystic banner of night unfurled.

It's about the pop group ALIVE with Daniel Wu, Andrew Lin, Terence Yin, and Conroy Chan. Apparently they decided to make a documentary about the Hong Kong media and music scene and in the process became a popular boy band while shooting everything that went on behind the scenes.

What this has to do with Karen is that in the movie that was released there are interviews with Hong Kong music and media industrialists, which Karen Mok is mentioned as one, along with Jacky Cheung, Miriam Yeung, and Nicholas Tse.

The name of the movie is "The Heavenly Kings", and a quote from Dan is "Don't watch the Chinese DVD because it's badly dubbed in Mandarin and the fucker's edited it!"

As well as the VCD (which I haven't watched yet as it's literally just arrived) you get a mouse pad, yes Karen's also pictured in it), a set of stickers (yes, there are four small Karen stickers) and a slim booklet containing images from the film (yes there are plenty of Karen pictures in it).
I have to say that it's well worth the money, it really is a must buy if you haven't bought it already.

Karen is being interviewed on this show this weekend. The channel doesn’t have a very strong signal in this country and quite often the picture breaks up, so the more of us who can record it the better. I’ve watched the show before and it’s an interesting show. Basically, it’s a half hour interview with a celebrity. So Karen will be the only person on the show. If it follows the format of previous shows they’ll interview her and the interview will be cut with clips of her MVs. It should be a good show. :o)

Found this on Hong Kong Timeline:

LeeHom [aka Wang Lihong], a Taiwan-born pop star, should remember May 28th, 2005 [or try his best to forget this day] forever. It might be one of the most embarrassing situations in his singer career. It's never easy to be a public figure--you may have a bad memory but people just remember your gaffes all along.

At the 16th Taiwan Golden Melody Awards ceremony, Karen Mok and Jay Chou were guests for presenting the Best Male Singer award. LeeHom Wang and Stanley Huang [Huang Lixing] were both nominees for the award. When Mok read "Wang--Li--", the audiences cheered up and people around LeeHom started to hug him. The congratulations were somewhat misleading that LeeHom ignored the last character "Xing". He turned to hug Stanley, a sign seen as greetings from winner, and then went onstage. Interestingly, Stanley Huang heard "Xing", stood up and were surrounded by his friends. It seems that he was not so sure whether the hug from LeeHom was comfort or congratulation. When ready for going onstage to claim his prize, he was surprised to find LeeHom was already there. When LeeHom found out it was a mistake, he felt so awkward and escaped from the stage. After the event he told the media that "I just sneaked away, feeling so embarrassed".

Karen Mok was later bombarded for her Cantonese accent. Actually in Cantonese, the pronunciations of "Wang" and "Huang" were the same. She apologized to LeeHom after the ceremony. Anyway, bad things might turn out to be good results. At least we are sure none of the nominees knew who would win, quite the opposite of many music awards in mainland China. And Karen Mok will work a lot on her Mandarin pronunciation.

I've finally laid my hands on the album!!! First things first, the poster I got is the one called the 'Underwear' version!!! The poster is HUGE (100x64cm)! There is another version called the 'Leggy' version, hmmm... maybe I can try searching online to see if anyone with extra copies of the poster is putting them up for sale! :)

Yes there are 13 tracks on this album. My favourite track is track no. 5 called "Sleeping Alone". It has a very floaty feel to it, especially the chorus... the song starts light at the beginning, then slowly builds up to a rich ending, and then trails off suddenly, leaving you hankering for more. I looked through the credits in the lyrics booklet and apparently, this is a cover version of an English song called "Be Be Your Love". Does this title ring any bells to anyone?? And not just this song, there are a couple of other songs which are also cover versions, and one very distinct track which I recognise, "24 Hrs", is the title track for the movie Ultraviolet (starring Milla Jovovich)! Perhaps in Taiwan they are using Karen's version to plug the movie there??

"24 Hrs" and "The World Is The Same" both have Cantonese versions as well, and I do like the Cantonese versions more than the Mandarin ones.

Overall, I prefer the slow tracks over the fast ones. Karen still works her magic best when she goes slow. She belts out the songs with such emotion that you feel compelled to reach out and comfort her (if only we can do that!!).

I hope all of you get to listen to this album very soon, and do post your comments on the album as well!!! :)

I've just translated a piece of text, firstly using babelfish, then using google and the google translation was much better. To use it, go to the google homepage, at the side of the search bar it says 'language tools'. Just click on this and from there it's easy to use, just like babelfish.
It doesn't give a perfect translation, but from my limited testing gives a less frustrating translation than babelfish. Hopefully this will allow us all to enjoy those reports from Sina. :o)

Karen Mok delivers

By MIN LEE

Karen Mok had just weeks to transform herself from a clean-cut, Hong Kong pop star with a clipped British accent into a grungy, New York East Village junky.

Given the circumstances, Mok gives a solid performance as the drug-addled Mimi in the Tony-winning Broadway musical Rent.

Mok has managed to master the dance numbers in the technically challenging, fast-paced rock musical about a group of struggling artists battling drug addiction and AIDS.

In Out Tonight, she shakes her body suggestively and tosses her long, curly hair, sending glitter into the air.

The popular singer-actress is flirtatious when toying with Roger, a songwriter with AIDS played by Jeremy Kushnier. But she doesn’t convey the desperation of Mimi.

Mok, a multilingual former winner of the Hong Kong Outstanding Students Award who speaks with an aristocratic British accent, simply isn’t convincing as a drug addict.

She goes for a grunge look, donning a silver tank top, shiny baby blue pants, black leather-like sleeves and high boots – but the whole package taken together doesn’t work.

In one scene, Mimi tosses away a bag of drugs in disgust, but Mok looks more like an innocent school girl confronted with a cockroach.

Mok’s singing lacks the soulfulness of Daphne Rubin-Vega who led the cast in the Broadway original, but she does add a touch of sadness and fragility to songs like Without You.

Inspired by Puccini’s La Boheme, Rent is touring Asia as part of its 10th anniversary celebrations. To add to its appeal in a region where Broadway musicals aren’t widely known, the show added Mok to its line-up and plastered her face on posters – a shrewd marketing move.

Mok’s solid performance is a testimony to her talent, especially considering she only trained individually in the US for two weeks and rehearsed with the full cast just four times before the launch of the show’s Asian tour in Singapore.

Mok has benefited from the multitasking approach of most stars in the Chinese-language entertainment world. Like her fellow stars, she juggles singing and acting careers. Mok won the best female singer award at Taiwan’s prestigious Golden Melody Awards in 2003. Other than Hong Kong movies, she has also appeared alongside Jackie Chan in the Hollywood film Around the World in 80 Days.

On closer glance, the casting of Mok is not a surprise. Besides her ability to sing and dance, she’s also one of a handful of Chinese stars who are fluent in English. Mok also has some musical experience – she trained for the London production of Miss Saigon.

Other standouts in the cast include Kushnier as Roger and Andy Senor in the role of transvestite Angel.

As a singer, Kushnier’s voice is relaxed but in control, switching from a trembling voice to a deep, powerful delivery. He also brings out the angst in Roger’s insecurity.

Senor can pass for a woman as Angel, who favours outrageous clothing like a Santa Claus outfit matched with zebra-striped tights. He fully immerses himself in a female persona, showing a woman’s gentle touch.

There’s a certain irreverent quality to Rent, perhaps a key to its popularity. Unlike other shows, its band is in full view of the audience on stage. The show starts with all the lights on. The set is simple, consisting of a loft, a staircase, a scaffolding and a desk. – AP

Rent is staged in Beijing (Dec 30 to Jan 4), Shanghai (Jan 7 and 8), Seoul (Jan 13 to Feb 5) and Taipei (Feb. 7 to 12).

She said that she couldn't take any photos even though she was in the front row because the performers all stayed to one side of the stage becuz thats where all the professional photographers were. If you were lucky enuf to be on the right side, you could get some great pix. If you were on the wrong side, it was tuff luck on you.

Here's the good news about the show: My friend said Karen was absolutely gorgeous and the whole idea of the show was practically an act of worship for her legs. She never saw Karen more sexy. At one point Karen wore a long outfit made entirely of human hair! Karen sounded good and did so many amazing things on stage, like even doing yoga!

I hate to post bad news about Karen but I was shocked at some of the things she told me. Here's the bad news: The shows were not sold out. There was so many open seats left that the sponsor, Adidas, were trying to give away FREE tickets at the shows! Can you imagine? Free tickets to see Karen in concert! But even so, there were still hundreds of empty seats! Sob!! I can't believe this! My friend said she was in HK for about 3 weeks b4 the show and there was almost no publicity for the concerts either! It was almost like a few mentions in the mags and then nothing for the next 2 weeks. She said that you could walk up to the stadium and there was not even a crowd to get in.

Ugh! I hate to even say the bad news but I think it's best to be honest about Karen. I bet that she was not even to blame for the bad amount of publicity for the show.

16 January 2006 -- SHE KNOWS THE SECRET OF BEAUTY

Hong Kong star Karen Mok is a triple-threat. She can dance, as her stage roles attest. She can sing, as evidenced by a string of hit CDs. And she can act, as audiences know through her various stage and film roles. She recently appeared in Beijing in the hit musical “Rent”. On "The List" today we take a look at Karen Mok, a woman knows that confidence makes a person beautiful.

Broadway musical“Rent”just finished a four-show run in Beijing. The play was an overwhelming success. And much of the credit goes to Karen Mok, female lead and the only Asian face in the cast.

Mok played the role of Mimi, an exotic dancer and HIV-positive junkie. She made up for the lack of soul in her voice with a touching fragility. Her singing and dancing talents were on full display, especially given her body-hugging outfit.

But this wasn't Mok's first time on stage. In 2004, she played the lead in drama "Eighteen Spring", where she portrayed legendary Chinese writer Eileen Chang.

In fact, Mok isn't only an accomplished stage performer, she's also a hit singer and big screen actress. Today we examine Mok's music to better understand the person behind the multi-talented persona.

Love’s So Great

The lyrics of one of Mok's most popular songs go, "Love is SOOOO Great, So Great". As her songs prove, Mok is very direct in expressing her feelings and doesn't care if other people don't approve.

Given her up-front personality, Mok is a natural subject of rumor. She's always drawn gossip concerning her off-screen relationships with her leading men. But Mok has never let the idle talk distress her. She's always faced the world with an upbeat attitude.

Karen Mok said: "I think love is part of a healthy life. That's it, nothing more."

Mok and her boyfriend, Stephen Fung, have stayed together through all the gossip. She won't let rumors affect her life. That's Karen Mok, living to the fullest, with ease and grace.

Love Me, Hands Up!

If you love me, then hands up! And if you don't, Mok won't force you. That's Karen Mok. With transparent clothes, skimpy bras and mini-chipaos, she has created her own sexy style. Even though she lacks the fashion-model look, Mok is radiant with confidence and charm. She believes beautiful women are those who believe in themselves.

Karen Mok said: “I love you all so much, I couldn't love you more! I'll give back all the love you give to me!"

Bold Mok, isn't afraid of change. She's tried various styles and looks. She has even posed naked in front of the camera, though you only get to see her back. She amazed onlookers at one of her album launches by jumping into a pool with her band.

Love Fruit

Mok is always setting new challenges for herself. One of the most versatile stars in China today, she can croon the low melody of "Love Fruit" or "Cloudy Day" just as easily as she can dance and sing hot dance numbers.

Mok's charm doesn't lie in being aloof and mysterious. She's real and right before you, unashamed. She's not a traditional Chinese beauty, but whenever she appears, audiences find it impossible to look away.

Rock.com has devoted 10% (5 of 50) online radio channels to Asian music. These are available for free on the front page of Rock.com and the streams are ad-free. For content, they have selected 50 stations from Live365.

What makes this so important is that Rock.com is the most-visited rock site on the internet and the fourth most-visited music site on the internet. That's HUGE!

Asian stations featured incude HKVP Radio (Hong Kong Vintage Pop), Hardcore-J, and MY station, Mandarin Radio. Thai, Philipino and Indian stations are also featured.

This is a big step forward for Asian music as it signifies that the big-money western music industry might be finally catching on.

Unfortunately there is no K-Pop station available because nobody has created a K-Pop station on Live365.

I'm still playing Karen about once an hour (The maximum allowed by the copyright laws). Maybe soon we'll see some new material.

For me, I discovered Karen years ago. I had heard her super-saccharine song "Candy Kisses' on the radio during a working vacation in Germany of all places. After I asked a couple of questions, I realized that I had already seen this terrific young entertainer in a couple of movies. She looked so different in both films (A CHINESE ODYSSEY and FALLEN ANGELS) that I hadn't made the connection. I sought out a few more of her films (her resume was pretty small back then) and I was hooked. A few cds later and I was sure that we had a superstar in the making to perhaps become the next Anita Mui -- multi-talented, curiously attractive, strong and brave. The years since have only supported my initial suspicions.

My only disappointment is that the magazine I was working for had hoped to attain an interview with Karen a couple of years back but it never worked out. I still hope to meet her in person some day and to do the definitive Karen Mok interview.

I looked through the threads but I don't see any discussions on "All The Way." Did we ever rate it?

Here's a contemporary article about it from 2004, from City Weekend:

All the Way is really a love story cum chase movie set in the wilds of Guangxi, and stars Hong Kong songstress Karen Mok, Beijing actor Jiang Wu (Shower, Beautiful New World), and Taiwanese actor-musician Zhang Chenyue.

Three hot stars with very different backgrounds are the bait that, Director Shi Runjiu hopes, will help make All the Way a hit in Chinese theaters all over the region. "That's my greatest ambition with this film," he says, referring to box office success.Shi and Loehr worked together before on Shi's first film, Beautiful New World. This time their basic formula for making the movie was much the same, says Shi. They agreed it would have to be a film Chinese people liked -- "not necessarily one I myself liked." It would also have to be a film that could be screened in China, no matter what (at least one violent scene was cut).

All the Way is a rather conventional love story which takes place in a setting that's unconventional for mainland movies. Mok must choose between her exciting gangster boyfriend, Ah Dong (Zhang Chenyue), or the man who saves her from run-ins with both gangsters and the police, Xiao Wang (Jiang Wu). The chase cuts through Guangxi's banana forests and ends up in Beihai, and may call to mind some of the wild hi-jinks reported in the last few years by newspapers and TV, which chronicle smuggling, drugs, and violent crime in remote parts of the country.

The buzz surrounding the film started during filming last spring, when reporters followed the crew around and placed bets whether or not Jiang Wu was too shy to kiss Karen Mok. The ??3 million production was sponsored by the likes of Ford and Yahoo, and and a van given by the automaker was being put up for grabs to promote the film's debut.

Anticipation is running high. Wu, of Shanghai distributors Paradise, likes Imar because "They don't make peasant films, or films with people wearing ancient costumes, and the directors are all around 30." Beijing distributor Xinyinglian sees All the Way becoming a bigger hit than Shower, which ended up selling 2 million tickets in the capital, four times better than expected.

Producer Loehr calls All the Way a "a cool, fast, modern film," one that fits into Imar's overall concept: "to create young films for young people." The company that gave China its first movie soundtrack, with Spicy Love Soup, has put together another hip package, with punk, techno, pop, and blues-roots. Zhang Chenyue did the title track, Karen Mok jumps in with a tune, and a Taiwanese-American act who's been compared to US pop star Moby, Yang Naiwen, pumps up the chase scenes. The film traveled to the Rotterdam Film Festival in January, but the objective wasn't to gain awards; after China, Imar still hopes it can market the film to foreign audiences. To Shi, the most important thing about the reception given the film there was that "People didn't get tired."

HONG KONG, Dec 6 (AP) -- Hong Kong pop star Karen Mok is a knockout as drug-addict Mimi in the Asian tour of the Broadway musical "Rent," one of her co-stars said Tuesday.

Andy Senor, who plays the transvestite Angel in the Tony-winning show, said he was initially skeptical about Mok taking on the role, but having seen her perform, he's now one of her biggest fans.

"As far as Karen Mok's concerned, she's awesome. She's just really fantastic," Senor said at a press conference in Hong Kong to promote the show's local performances.

"She's been so professional, such a great example. Half an hour before the show she's out there stretching. She's very committed," he said.

Senor said Mok only rehearsed with the full cast four times before the Asian tour launched. The role of drug addict Mimi also poses an artistic challenge for Mok, who has a clean-cut image.

Mok didn't attend Tuesday's press conference because of other engagements.

Senor, who has been part of the "Rent" cast since 1997, said not only is Mok's name drawing the crowds, but her performance is constantly improving.

"Every day she pulls something out different and she gets more edgy. At first she came with her hair straight and very sweet and very nice, and then like, when she steps on stage, she's totally wild," he said.

"Rent" is the story of a group of struggling artists in New York's East Village who battle drug addiction and AIDS. The show is touring Asia to mark its 10th anniversary. The company just finished 13 shows in Singapore.

After performing in Hong Kong Dec. 13-25, it is scheduled to move on to Beijing, Shanghai and Seoul in South Korea.

Senor said the themes of the show are universal.

"Every city around the world has homeless people, has transvestites, has struggling artists," he said.

Censors in mainland China and Singapore haven't asked show organizers to tone down the show's sexually explicit lyrics, "Rent" Asian tour manager Rob Scherzer said. The two countries are known for their control over media content.

He said ticket sales in Singapore were satisfactory, despite a restricted rating, but didn't offer exact numbers. He said he didn't have information on ticket sales in Hong Kong.

Welcoming those who came to join them with cheers and hugs and shouting, "We are homosexuals! We love you!" to hundreds of spectators along the way, the joyful procession marched for 30 minutes from 228 Park, along Hengyang Road, to the Red Playhouse in Ximending. The festival's tongzhi dream lover contest and tongzhi love song poll attracted some 16,700 and 18,600 votes respectively. "In the first year of the poll, some winners expressed antipathy toward being voted homosexuals' dream lovers. Such an attitude is no longer apparent. Actor Tony Yang, who was in the chart, even showed up to support the festival." This year's top tongzhi dream lover was Ella, a member of the popular girl band S.H.E. Following behind were Hong Kong star Karen Mok and Singaporean singer Sun Yan-zi. All three are artists popular for their healthy and energetic images.

Ten Things You Should Know about the Broadway Hit Musical "RENT"

HONG KONG, Nov. 28 /Xinhua-PRNewswire/ -- As part of its 10th
Anniversary World Tour, the Broadway hit musical RENT will be coming to the
Lyric Theatre, Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, for a strictly limited
season from December 13-25, 2005.

In response to heightened interest in the show's performances in Hong
Kong, the organizers have released a list of top ten facts regarding RENT
that are not widely known. Here's the countdown from one to ten:

Fact One:
RENT received its world premiere off Broadway in February 13, 1996. The
musical transferred to Broadway on April 29, 1996 and has since become the
10th longest running show in Broadway history.

Fact Two:
Jesse L. Martin, known for his role as Detective Ed Green in TV's Law
and Order was one of the original cast members for RENT. In the musical's
early days, Jesse L. Martin played the role of Tom Collins, an HIV computer
genius returning to New York.

Fact Three:
The RENT costumes have, over the years, become a fashion statement
characterized by the thousands of fans who continually turn up for
performances dressed in RENT couture. At one point, the following proved so
popular that Bloomingdales in New York opened a dedicated RENT outlet. The
outlet retailed custom-designed, ready-to-wear labels of RENT-wear for men,
women and teenagers.

Fact Four:
There have been 25 productions of RENT, performed in 15 different
languages. In support of philanthropic initiatives, the first two rows of
seating on Broadway are traditionally dedicated to beneficiaries from local
community groups or charities and fans who do not have the money but wish to
see their idols close-up.

Fact Five:
One of the themes RENT deals with is sexuality. Increasingly, parents
and children are visiting the production together. The show bridges the
parent-children generation gap by addressing taboo social issues that are
not always openly addressed in the home. In doing so, the musical is
helping to bring families closer together.

Fact Six:
A member of the Spice Girls, Mel B, played the role of Mimi.

Fact Seven:
RENT today has a cult following of "RENT-heads." People in the show say
they recognize the same audience members coming back five, ten, fifteen
times!

Fact Eight:
RENT has received the praises of a host of movie and television stars
the world over that include Mel Gibson, Janet Jackson, Ricky Lake, Kevin
Bacon, George Clooney, Michelle Pfeiffer and Jodie Foster. The show has
also appeared on the cover of Newsweek and is only the fifth production to
ever have won both the Pulitzer Prize and the Tony Award for best musical.

Fact Nine:
RENT has the biggest rate of repeat ticket sales on Broadway.

Fact Ten:
RENT's creator Jonathan Larson died of an aortic aneurysm on the morning
of January 25, 1996. Sadly, his passing was just hours after RENT's final
dress rehearsal off-Broadway, and ten days before his 36th birthday.

This is from Muzi and was dated on December 30, 2000. I think the role eventually went to Cherrie Ying Choi Yi (because of the English language element). Anyway, here is what Muzi reported:

"Andy Lau's artist management company has signed on actress Karen Mok to manage her singing and acting career, GrooveAsia reported.

Under the three-year contract worth HKD $30 million, Karen has been promised parts in at least six movies.

For a start, she will play the lead role in Andy's next blockbuster movie, Professional Killer, which also stars Sorimachi Takashi.

Karen's contract with Rock Records ends next month."

I think Cherrie did a great job in the film that was released as FULLTIME KILLER but just think of what Karen would have brought to the role....

Does anybody know of other roles that Karen missed out on?

If you don't mind all the Hollywood flairs (special effects, etc) that they used in the story, then the film is pretty good for about 3/4 but then gets lost. I like the twist about Karen's character (SPOILER: you think she is evil but then you learn a secret about her) even if the director handled it a little clumsy. Some of the story is a little confusing but maybe that's becuz it's being described by a little boy. Karen has a big role but she gets overshadowed because the focus is about Andy Lau's character of a little boy who hates his step-mother (Karen) and wants to escape his home. The boy takes a potion that makes him grow older in leaps and bounds. I'm still not sure if the ending is happy or sad. It could have used a better ending.
I rate it about a 5 out of 10.

From ChannelnewsAsia October 18:

Karen Mok promises to deliver the goods on stage
By Elisa Chia, TODAY

KAREN MOK is probably every marketing man's dream. She's articulate, multilingual and photogenic. And who can resist that come-hither look?

The Hong Kong actress-singer will be starring in the Pulitzer Prize and Tony award-winning musical Rent, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary with a world tour.

The Asian leg premieres in Singapore on Nov 22 and will move on to Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai, Seoul and Taiwan.

Although Mok will perform alongside a star ensemble of Broadway actors, she has - without a doubt - stole their thunder.

The leaflets and the posters make Rent look like The Karen Mok Show.

Considering she features only in the Asian leg of the world tour, is Mok being used as a marketing tool to help put more bums on seats?

"Ooh, no, no, it shouldn't be the case," she said with an embarrassed laugh. "The play isn't just about one particular character.

"There are a dozen or so characters whom, you know, are all very captivating."

Mok zipped into town to promote the musical yesterday and flies back to Hong Kong today.

She might deny being a marketing tool, but she's certainly happy to be one of a kind.

"I think it's a novelty. It's the first time an Asian star has been cast in a Broadway production," the 35-year-old said proudly.

In the musical, which focuses on the trials and tribulations of a community of artists in bohemian New York, Mok plays the role of Mimi, an exotic dancer and HIV-positive junkie.

For the actress, Rent presents her with another opportunity to stretch her range.

"I think I've always had a reputation for going for the unconventional, and that I'm always pushing the limit," she said.

"So I think this is another example of me doing that."

Mok has trained individually for her role in New York for about two weeks. Group rehearsals don't begin until the first week of next month in Wuhan, China.

The attention will undoubtedly be focused on her during the Asian leg of the tour. Will her experienced Broadway co-stars be jealous?

"Well, I'm no diva in real life, so there's nothing to worry about," she said.

"I don't think they'll mind because we're doing this in Asia. It's an Asian tour. Since I'm the only one the Asian audience will recognise, it makes sense to put me on the adverts and stuff.

"But I'm sure a lot of people want to watch it because its Rent, a real Broadway production.

"In fact, I've lots to learn from these guys. They've been in the Broadway business for years, whereas this is my first attempt at doing the Broadway show.

"So I'll be the little baby of the company."

Expectations are high and Mok is mindful that critics have their claws out and are poised to strike.

But the actress is relaxed enough to admit that she didn't have to audition for the role and had not seen the production until two months ago in New York.

"I never managed to see the show when I was studying in London - it was always sold out! Such is the appeal of Rent," she said.

Mok has certainly come a long way from her first musical - she played the part of a dove in Noah's Ark when she was eight years old.
.
"Rent is very different from the other productions that go on Broadway. Those are fairytales with unreal people in unreal situations," she said.
.
"Rent talks about the ugly side of life and things people don't really talk about. And the characters are the most unglamourous people around.
.
"That's why Rent stands out."
